Our preparation for an encounter with Jesus in Holy Communion and in the People of God is also reflected in our clothes: they should be modest. In most circumstances, these guidelines will help us dress appropriately for Mass.
Both men and women should have their shoulders covered; strapless or sleeveless, spaghetti straps, tank tops muscle shirts would be considered inappropriate. If your clothes have this style, please also wear a shawl or sweater.
Neck lines for shirts for both men and women should be close to the neck, not low-cut or unbuttoned to the chest; again, you may need to use a scarf or shawl or second shirt.
Skirts or shorts should extend to the knees. No mini-skirts or short shorts.
Clothes should not be tight, form-fitting. Skinny jeans, leggings and spandex sportswear would be inappropriate clothes for Mass.
Clothes should not be see-through, ripped or dirty. You are coming into the presence of the King of Kings.
Images and words printed on clothes should not be contrary to the values we find in the Gospel.
These guidelines for Mass also apply to special occasions: weddings, baptisms, quinceañeras, etc. Good fashion can still be modest, respectful of the religious celebration.
Our internal attitudes and external expressions help us realize this is an encounter with the divine.
